An English-born American actress, born in London, England, United Kingdom, as Margaret Lorraine Gillmore. She married actor and theater director Robert Ross (1935-1954), who remained with her until his death. Her most notable works include Cause for Alarm! (1951), High Society (1956), Peter Pan (1960), and Gaby (1956).
She had a long career as a Broadway stage actress, also appearing in films and TV series, mostly in the 1950s and early 1960s. She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began her stage career in A Scrap of Paper (1917). She retired from theater after performing in the musical Sail Away in 1961.
She began her cinematic career with The Home Girl (1928) and her first feature film was Wayward (1932). Afterwards, she stopped acting in movies due to her preoccupation with theatrical work. She returned to cinema with Perfect Strangers (1950). Her first TV work was The Ford Theatre Hour (1950), and her last work was The Trouble with Angels (1966). She retired until she died in New York City, New York, USA on June 30, 1986, of cancer.
