British actor born in Chester, England, on June 25, 1897. He got married to Evelyn Shirley Deuchars (1926-1952) and they had a child. He joined the army as a commissioned officer in World War I. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and appeared in the theater from 1924 to 1929. As a result of his strong friendship with Naunton Wayne, director Alfred Hitchcock brought them together in the movie The Lady Vanishes (1938). They made other films together during the forties, and they collaborated in radio programs. Among his notable works Night Train to Munich (1940), Millions Like Us (1943), and Whisky Galore! (1949). He died in Westminster, London, on October 20, 1952 from liver failure.
