A British screenwriter, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, Uk. He studied law at Cambridge University, but worked as a journalist and writer in Australia and then London. He also worked in advertising, a salesman, served briefly in the police, and worked as a foreign correspondent in Argentina, but he could not resist his desire to write. He wrote several novels, and many of his writings centered around English eccentricities, and he also wrote police dramas. Among his credits are The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), which won an Oscar for Best Story and Screenplay, Sons and Lovers (1960), and Passport to Pimlico (1949). He died in Surrey, England, UK on February 11, 1989, aged 81.
