British actress who was born in Madras, British India on September 1, 1908 as Avice Spitta and died in Twickenham, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. She won the British CDA Award for Best British Supporting Actress in 1960. She married actor Bruno Barnabe (1940-1976), had a child, and remained with him until her death. She is known for The Franchise Affair (1951), Pride and Prejudice (1952), and Nothing But the Best (1964). She was a British theatrical actress who excelled in playing the roles of upper-class widows or mothers on the British screen. Her first work was Indoor Fireworks (1947). She continued her work in cinema and television until she presented her last work, The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972). She retired until she died in 1976 at the age of 65.
