He is an Irish writer, born in Northern Ireland. Among his most famous works are Horse Lords and Tales of Old Russia. He married writer Diane Duane, with whom he co-authored several works. He attended Friends School in Lisburn and then earned a BA Honors degree in English Literature from Queen's University in Belfast. He moved to Los Angeles, California, where Duane was employed by the DC animation studio.
