A German-born actor, born as Alfred Pollack in Koblenz, Germany. He had an extensive career in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1980s. He studied acting in Berlin and Vienna, fled from Germany in 1936, and while in England, he mastered English and worked as an interpreter. He began his acting career in 1950, after appearing in passing roles during the forties, appeared on stage in musicals, and played starring roles in many films. He mostly played a Nazi officer. Among his notable works are The Blue Max (1966), Victory (1981), and Where Eagles Dare (1968). He died in Châteauneuf-Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, France on May 19, 1989, of cancer and complications of AIDS.
