A British actor and director, born on March 30, 1880, in Croydon, Surrey, England, UK, as Ernest George Harcourt Williams. He studied at Beckenham Abbey and Whitgift Grammar School, Croydon. In 1897, after he took drama lessons, he joined Frank Benson's touring company.
Hartcourt Williams served as the director of the Old Vic theater company, directing about 50 plays for the company, then resigned from his job as director of the Old Vic; however, he continued his theatrical work as a director and actor. Also, he appeared in more than 35 TV and cinema productions.
His screen debut was On the High Road (1938). He is known for Hamlet (1948), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), and Roman Holiday (1953). He was married to the actress Jean Sterling MacKinlay. Williams died on December 13, 1957, at the age of 77.
