British actor born in Perth, Scotland, on June 5, 1908. He was married to actress Pamela Cundell (1981-1987), and she remained with him until his death. Bill began his life as a clerk in a bank, then he worked in radio and theater before joining the army, where he served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II. After the war he made a theatrical tour in Australia, and appeared in the Canadian Bernard Shaw Festival, and presented small roles in cinema and television. Among his important works are: The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (1985), Helter Skelter (1949), and Eye of the Needle (1981). In 1987, he won the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Comedy Performance for the Play "When We Get Married". He died in Bushey, England, on September 5, 1987 of emphysema.
