Biography

English actress who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom on May 6, 1921 as Elizabeth McDonald Sellars. In 1960, she married surgeon Francis Austin Henley and remained with him until his death in 2009. She is known for The Barefoot Contessa (1954), The Shiralee (1957) and...Read more Forbidden Cargo (1954). She was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and at the Old Vic Bristol. She spent several years on stage in her native Scotland, and after several years, she appeared in the West End theater in London. She appeared in British films and television programs, and during the Second World War, she worked with the ENSA organization where she entertained British forces. After her marriage in 1960, her stardom declined, and during the 1960s, she alternated between television and theater, and as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, she proved her strength as a serious actress in classic plays. She retired in 1990 and died in France in 2019, at the age of 98.
