Japanese actor and director born in Kyoto, Japan on May 15, 1933. He studied acting at an acting school in Tokyo. He made his name in film and television acting, before moving to screenwriting and directing at the age of fifty. He received many awards and honors in the 1980s. He got married twice and did not have children. His most important works are: The Funeral (1984), Tampopo (1985), and A Taxing Woman (1987). He died in Tokyo, Japan on December 20, 1997 after jumping to commit suicide.
