British actor, born in Canning Town, London, on July 11, 1916 as Reginald Alfred Varney. He got married to Lilian Emma Flavell (1939-2002) and they had a daughter. He is best known for playing the lead role of the bus driver Stan Butler in the series On the Buses and its three spin-offs . He took piano lessons as a child, which qualified him to play professionally in clubs, bars and theaters, until he became a solo pianist at the Windmill Theater in 1938. During World War II, he served in the Corps of Electrical Engineers, learned to drive trucks, and entertained the troops with his talents. He suffered several heart attacks that forced him to retire. His notable works include: On the Buses (1969-1973), Down the 'Gate (1975-1976), and Holiday on the Buses (1973). He died of a microbial infection in the chest, on November 16, 2008, at the age of 92.
