A German writer, born on December 27, 1896, in Nackenheim, Germany. He studied humanities, biology, and botany at the University of Frankfurt. He was married to Alice von Hardan and Annemarie Ganz. He received numerous awards such as the Georg Büchner Prize (1929), the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt (1952), the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1955), and the Order Pour le Mérite (1967). He is known for The Captain from Köpenick (1956), The Blue Angel (1930), and A Love Story (1954). He died on January 18, 1977, in Saas-Fee, Valais, Switzerland.
