An Iranian researcher, author, poet, translator, and educator, born in 1947 in Tehran, Iran. She teaches Persian literature and women's studies at the University of Virginia and is also the Chair of the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures. Milani is a recipient of the Carnegie Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She attended California State University, East Bay, graduating with a BA in French Literature in 1970, then obtained a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in 1979. She appeared as herself in Born in Evin (2019) and Simin, Resident of a Wandering Island (2013).
