An American actress of German-English descent, born in Tacoma, Washington, USA, on April 29, 1896, as Edith Carlson. Edith married Morris Otto Evanson (1923-1975) and remained with him until his death. She's known for Rope (1948), Marnie (1964), The Big Heat (1953), and Shane (1953).
She was one of the stars of the golden age of Hollywood. She worked in film and television and was the daughter of a Protestant minister. She was educated at Stadium High School, where she appeared in many plays for a joint-stock theater company, and in 1939, she headed to Hollywood to work as a supporting actress in films. She often appeared as a spinster, maid, or a middle-aged secretary. During her film career, she appeared in many classics, and with the advent of television, her career expanded, and she appeared in many television shows. She died on November 29, 1980, in Riverside County, California, USA.
