He is an English actor, writer, and director. He was born on August 4, 1941, in England, UK. He went to the Whitgift School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he got the Vanbrugh Award and the silver medal. He appears in various productions and is known for radio acting and voicing audiobooks. He is an Associate of RADA, and in the 2000 Queen's New Year's Honors List, he received the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to drama. He is known for co-writing Jackanory (1984-1985) and for providing his voice to the audiobooks of P. G. Wodehouse's works, for which he won an Audie Award. He is married to Rosalind Ayres, with whom they have two children. Both of them founded the radio production company, Jarvis & Ayres Productions. He published a book of memoirs titled "Acting Strangely: A Funny Kind of Life."
