An American comedian, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 11, 1927, as Morton Lyon Sahl. He got married three times and had one child. Among his most important works are Johnny Cool (1963), Nothing Lasts Forever (1984), Don't Make Waves (1967), and All the Young Men (1960). Mort Sahl was an actor and writer. He was considered the first modern comedian. He was a pioneer in a style of social satire that makes fun of current political events using improvised monologues and of politicians, presidents, and dignitaries. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sahl was a trailblazer in critical comedy. He was the first to mock the presidents of the United States and other distinguished government figures, and many comedians followed him in his style. Sahl performed in nightclubs, theaters, and university campuses, appeared in many television programs, was a popular guest on talk shows, played a number of movie roles, presented a one-man show on Broadway, participated in Broadway and off-Broadway productions, released recordings, and wrote some books as well as movie scripts for great stars. Mort Sahl was the only child of Jewish parents. His father failed to become a playwright on Broadway, so he moved to Canada, where he owned a tobacco shop, then relocated to Los Angeles and worked as a clerk and court reporter for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mort attended Belmont High School in Los Angeles and wrote for the school's newspaper, then joined Compton College, and graduated from the University of Southern California after obtaining a degree in traffic engineering and city management, then became an actor and playwright. He died at the age of 94 in Mill Valley, California, USA, on October 26, 2021.
