British actor and director, born on December 13, 1904, in West Kensington, London, England, United Kingdom, as Glencairn Alexander Byam Shaw. He was married to actress Angela Baddeley (1929-1976) and they had one child, with whom she remained until her death. He was the youngest of five siblings to the artist John Byam Liston Shaw and Caroline Evelyn Eunice Pyke-Nott. He was educated at Westminster School. He made his stage debut in 1923 without prior training. In the 1940s, he was director of was the director of the Old Vic Theatre School, and then Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. In 1954, he was awarded a CBE and in 1959 he received an honorary DLitt from the University of Birmingham. He is known for Look Back in Anger (1959), The Merry Wives of Windsor (1955), and The Dance of Death (1969). He died on April 29, 1986, in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom, of Alzheimer's.
