He worked in the art department of a newspaper before graduating from the University of Tasmania in 1954. He published his first novel in 1958. He then attended Stanford University,...Read more where he studied writing. Among his fellow students were American writers Ken Kesey and Larry McMurtry. He was awarded an A.O. (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the 1995 Queen's New Year's Honours List for his services to literature. He married Irene Vilnois in 1959, and they had one child and divorced in 1979. He subsequently married Robin Whyte-Butler, and their marriage lasted until his death. He died of cancer on September 23, 2013, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
