American actor, born on June 4, 1884, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He was previously married to Ruth Mitchell and Mabel Reed. He was a film and stage actor from the silent era of American cinema, and a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). and holds the first name in the records of the union. In 1909, he made his stage debut and in 1911 he entered the world of silent cinema and made short, one-reel films (10 minutes). In the twenties, he signed a contract with the Goldwyn Company, and after sound entered films he appeared in the 1930s as a gray-haired voice actor with a distinctive look, playing the roles of bankers, industrialists, scientists, and politicians. He is known for The Jazz Singer (1927), The Squall (1929), and Wings (1927). He died on December 5, 1942, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, of a heart attack.
