A Polish footballer, born in Starograd Grański, Poland. He played as a midfielder and participated in the FIFA World Cup with his country, winning a gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics. His international career began in 1968, and he played 97 matches with the Polish national team, scoring 41 goals. He helped his country achieve third place in the 1974 World Cup, and in the same year, he was awarded third third-best player in Europe, behind Johan Cruyff, who won first place, and Franz Beckenbauer, the captain of the German national team, who finished second. He also participated with the Polish national team in the 1978 World Cup, scoring one goal, as the team finished fifth. He also contributed to his country's gold and silver medals at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. He died at the age of 41 on September 1, 1989, in a car accident in San Diego, USA. He was buried there before his widow decided to return his remains to the Polish capital, Warsaw, 22 years after his death, to be reburied before the start of the 2012 European Championship, which was held in Poland and Ukraine. This decision was made in response to appeals from Legia Warsaw fans to rebury him in the Polish capital before the start of the European Championship.
