He was a prolific American actor in film and television, and also appeared on Broadway. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1929 and participated in theatrical work, playing the role of Hamlet on Broadway. In the early 1940s, he worked in film, playing supporting roles. His calm demeanor led to roles as military officers and other authority figures. He later moved into television. Nelson died in Hemet, California, USA, at the age of 80.
