American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on February 22, 1915. He was married to Evelyn Lois Schwartz (1949-1993), they had two children, and she stayed with him until his death. He frequently played the role of villains in Warner Brothers films and appeared in many films with Humphrey Bogart. He attended Senn High School in Chicago and graduated from The University of Chicago with a fine arts degree. He worked as a manager in nightclubs before moving to Hollywood and provided supporting roles. Among his most important works are The Big Heat (1953), Key Largo (1948), Get Smart (1965-1970), and To Have and Have Not (1944). He died in Santa Monica, California, USA on May 25, 1993, of a stroke.
