English actress, acting coach, and writer. She was born in Windsor, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom. She won the Photoplay Award for Best Actress (1947) and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1960) in recognition of her cinematic contributions. She was married to actor Julian L’Estrange. She worked with several theater companies and became known as a brilliant Shakespearean performer, forming a distinguished theatrical partnership with her husband. Among her most notable films are A Damsel in Distress (1937), The Dark Corner (1946), The Perils of Pauline (1947), and Rope (1948). She was regarded as one of the finest tragediennes on Broadway and in London, as well as one of Hollywood’s leading drama and voice coaches. She died in New York City, New York, United States, on April 25, 1955, from a heart attack at the age of 77.
