A British stage, film, and television actor, born in Dulwich, London, England, United Kingdom. He married actress Beryl Evans (1945-2013), they had a child, and she remained with him until he died. Among his most important works are Last of the Summer Wine (1973-2010), Are You Being Served? (1972-1985), The Bed Sitting Room (1969), and Gosford Park (2001).
Frank Thornton's father worked as a bank manager and played the organ in church, so Frank learned to play the organ, played the cello in the school orchestra, and worked as a cellist. He was also a corporal in the Officers Training Corps until 1937, then he worked as a clerk in an insurance company.
Frank Thornton attended the London School of Dramatic Art in evening classes, worked in a repertory company, and then in West End theaters until he joined the Royal Air Force and worked as an airman during World War II, in addition to entertaining soldiers during the war. Frank was discharged in 1947 and continued working in theater until he entered the world of cinema and television, and he was prolific. He died in Barnes, London, England, United Kingdom, on March 16, 2013, at the age of 92.
