He was an Austrian-born British actor, born on March 4, 1899, in Vienna, Austria, as Peter Ihle. He is of German-Turkish parentage and moved to Britain in 1938. During World War II, he used the BBC's European Service to broadcast speeches by Winston Churchill in German translation. He is known for Walk a Crooked Mile (1961), Pursuit of the Graf Spee (1956), and Bhowani Junction (1956). He was married to Maxine Wolpert. He died on October 29, 1966, in London, England.
