A British actress born in Toxteth, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. She never married. She was a pioneer of musical theater, television, and film comedy with a long and distinguished career in variety theater. Additionally, she was among the first female improvisational comedians to perform in nightclubs. During World War II, she joined the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) to entertain troops. Some of her most notable works include Are You Being Served? (1979), Dentist in the Chair (1960), Bright’s Boffins (1970), and The Family Way (1966). She passed away in London, England, United Kingdom, on November 8, 2005, from pneumonia at the age of 87.
