An American actress, born in Brooklyn, New York, United States. After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she started her career traveling the country in vaudeville and classical theater before making a name for herself on Broadway in several productions. She helped to establish theater as a profession and was one of the founding members of the theater union. She married actor John Westley, with whom she had a single child before their split. Relatively late in life, she made her cinematic debut in 1934. Among her most notable works are Death Takes a Holiday (1934), The Age of Innocence (1934), Show Boat (1936), and Stowaway (1936). She passed away on December 1, 1942, in Middlebush, New Jersey, at the age of 67.
