Francis Compton appeared in many films and television programs, but he is primarily known for his stage performances. He was a member of the Compton family. He appeared for the first time in the Compton Comedy Company owned by his father, then appeared in the Theatre Royal in 1904. He fought in World War I and received the Military Cross in 1918. After the war, he continued his theatrical work, then appeared on Broadway in New York. His last stage appearance was at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1963. His film career began in 1936 and continued until 1957. He died in St. Joseph's Hospital, Stamford, Connecticut, USA, on September 17, 1964.
