An American character actress, born in Los Angeles, California, USA. She started her career in theater in California, then headed to New York, where she continued acting on Broadway, then headed to Hollywood, where she began appearing in cinema in the early forties. She usually played strict matriarchal or aristocratic social roles. She married musician William Hinshaw and they divorced in 1951. Among her notable works are You Were Never Lovelier (1942), The Wife Takes a Flyer (1942) and Janie Gets Married (1946). She died in Los Angeles, California, USA on July 7, 1975, at age 73.
