An American actress, born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. She was the first African-American actress to sign a film contract and was a stage, film, and television actress for more than 50 years. She began her career in entertainment, touring the East Coast with many theater groups. She then moved to California to become a member of the fledgling film community. She became known as a character actress, appeared in high-profile films in silent cinema, and transitioned easily to sound films. She and her children all appeared in some films, which were produced at the Fine Arts Studio in Los Angeles.
She played East Asian, American Indian, Spanish, African and Negro characters. She was married twice and had three children. Among her notable works are Safari (1940), Maid of Salem (1937) and Kentucky (1938). She died of a stroke in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA on February 1, 1959, at age 85.
