An American film and stage actress and television interviewer, born in Elizabeth, Louisiana. She spent two years at the Academy of San Luis Rey, where she practiced drama, then attended Point Loma High School, then attended San Diego State College, and became interested in acting. She gained fame as a movie actress in the 1940s before moving to television in the 1950s to host her own talk show.
She worked in many regional theaters and appeared in many Broadway productions. She was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Among her notable works are Between Two Worlds (1944), Lady Gangster (1942), and Danger Signal (1945). She was married three times and had three children. She died of stomach cancer in Deià, Spain, on March 9, 1983, at age 65.
