A British actor, born in Shaw, Oldham, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. He got married to Dorothy Hirst (1939-1995), they had five children, and she remained with him until her death. His works include The Theban Plays by Sophocles (1986), Dad's Army (1972-1977), The Big Spender (1965), and The First Lady (1968). His father was a salesman in a cotton factory, and he received his education at Rydal Penrhos School in North Wales. He joined the army at the outbreak of World War II, was evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk, following the defeat of the British forces, and was sent to India to join its army. While in the army, he worked in amateur productions in Mumbai, India, and his last mission was organizing British prisoners of war returning from the docks of Calcutta, India. He was discharged with the rank of captain in 1946, and joined the Oldham Coliseum Theatre for 11 years, touring the theater where he worked as an actor, director, stage manager, and producer. In the early sixties, he worked in cinema and television, playing the roles of a civil servant and a retired colonel, while touring theatrically with traveling theater companies. Eric loved gardening and was a regular member of the local Methodist church. Eric died in Peterborough, England, United Kingdom, on August 20, 2008, at the age of 90.
