He was born to a father, who worked as a baker and attended the Royal High School of Edinburgh, Scotland. Before his cinematic appearance, he began his performance activities in theater and nightclubs in the early 1950s. He formed a successful duo with comedian Ronnie Parker, who worked in cinema, theater, and television. He served in the Royal Air Force as a commissioned officer, was awarded an OBE as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1978 for his entertainment services, and was promoted to the rank of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012 for his services to entertainment and charity. He died in Shirley, London, England, United Kingdom on March 31, 2016, from motor neurone disease, at the age of 85.
