He trained as an electrical engineer, and while serving in the Royal Artillery in India, he became interested in the performing arts. After his discharge from the army, he joined Theatre Workshop in Manchester. He married Ann Shirley Jones, who remained with him until her death. He died in Liss, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom, on November 16, 2018, at the age of 93.
