He received his education at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and joined the University of Cambridge to study medicine. After two years in the British Royal Army, he decided to give up medicine and joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He began working at the London Arts Theatre, then Liverpool Playhouse, and in the mid-fifties, he began working in cinema and television.
