An Austrian stage and film actor, born in Baden, Austria-Hungary. He began his career in the silent era and joined talkies. He worked in German theater and cinema until the Nazis entered Austria, so he immigrated to the United States in 1938. He worked in theater and cinema, playing Nazi roles in most of his American films, and returned to Europe after the end of World War II. Among his notable credits are Die Försterchristl (1931), Sacco and Vanzetti (1927), and Underground (1941). He died in Zurich, Switzerland on April 3, 1975, at age 75.
