Despite their having passed 10 weeks since its opening in Egypt, Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” continues to earn ticket sales at the Egyptian box office. The production’s revenue has so far topped 3,400,000 Egyptian pounds (596,000 dollars). “Inception” has thereby become the second highest grossing film in Egypt in 2010 following the massive success of “Avatar”, the returns of which have reached 8 million Egyptian pounds ( 1.4 million dollars). Both pictures were distributed by United Motion Pictures – the largest motion pictures distributor in Egypt and the Arab World. The company is also the official agent in Egypt for American studio companies 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros.Shady Zeid, Managing Director for sales and distribution and the official charged with following up cinema sales for United Motion Pictures has asserted: “the massive success of ‘Inception’ shows that Egyptian audiences are ready to accept the novel and the unconventional in American cinema. The film has consistently earned revenue over a long period of screening spanning several weeks.”In worldwide box office sales “Inception” has thus far earned 285 million dollars in America alone, this is in addition to 468 million dollars internationally, thus putting the box office sales at 753 million dollars up until today. The film is still being screened at theaters across the world and is expected to gross more than a billion dollars by the end of its run. This is in addition to the fact that the picture has maintained its position as number one in the American and worldwide box office for quite some time. The film had a very strong premier worldwide in its first three days which placed it well ahead of competing productions.“Inception” takes the point of view of Cobb who takes it upon himself to influence industry magnate Robert Fisher into dismantling his industrial empire. In order to achieve this Cobb invades Fisher’s mind while in a dream state and thus attempts to plant an idea into Fisher’s mind. Dramatic events ensue – events which could be interpreted from both philosophical and metaphysical perspectives. Thus the screenplay takes the viewer on a psychic tour-de-force while retaining coherence and elements of consistent thrill.
