Cate Blanchett is now in talks with Disney to star in one of its oldest and most beloved classics: Cinderella. Blanchett, the Oscar-winner known to steal scenes as Galadriel in "The Lord of the Rings" franchise, will be playing the evil stepmother.

It seems to be high tide for Disney fairytales turned dark, live-action Hollywood epics. Just this past year, "Mirror Mirror" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" came out, both revolving around the storybook damsel in distress Snow White. Meanwhile "Maleficent," starring Angelina Jolie as the "queen of evil" in Sleeping Beauty, just wrapped filming and is scheduled for a 2014 release.

The film will be directed Mark Romanek, and the script penned by "New Moon" director Chris Weitz. The still-untitled adaptation is slotted for a late 2013 release.
