Paramount Pictures has announced the U.S. premiere of its new crime thriller "Jack Reacher" will be postponed following the devastating mass shooting in a Connecticut elementary school yesterday that took 28 lives, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10.

The 20-year-old gunman, Adam Lanza, forcibly entered the Newtown, Connecticut school, shot and killed 28 people, and then took his own life. Also among the victims were the school's principal and the gunman's own mother. The police investigation has yet to make a statement clarifying the motives behind the horrific killing spree.

Paramount said in its statement it would be postponing the domestic premiere in Pittsburgh, where the film was shot, "out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken," adding "our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones."

Tom Cruise plays the title character in "Jack Reacher," an ex-army cop investigating a sniper shooting in a Pittsburgh park.
