March 8 is International Women's Day, and in honor of the much needed holiday the new documentary "Girl Rising" is opening. The film threads together the stories of nine girls across the globe-- from Egypt to Ethiopia, India to Haiti, Peru to Afghanistan--and their struggles to get an education. It's narrated by Oscar-winners Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Liam Neeson, among others.
The film shines a light on nine "unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances" and is part of the 10x10 awareness campaign for education equality.
"These films give visual corroboration to knowledge we already have: Educating women and girls has the most optimistic, positive effects on families, communities, and economies worldwide," said Meryl Streep. "If to see it is to know it, this film delivers hope; reasonable, measurable, tangible hope that the world can be healed and helped to a better future."
