The family behind " Winter of Discontent" celebrated the opening night of their film in Egyptian cinemas yesterday at the Nile City Cinema on the Corniche.

There to represent the film were its director and producer Ibrahim El Batout, as well as its stars Amr Waked, Farah Youssef, and Salah Al Hanafi. Some familiar faces also turned out for the opening, including businessman Ahmed Abo Hashima, intellectual and writer Alaa Al Aswany, political activists Ahmed Harara and George Ishaq, and producer Gaby Khoury.

The film alternates between 2009 and the winter 2011 uprising that shook Egypt and the world at large. An incident in 2009 involving three individuals, a television anchor, an activist, and a state security officer, interweaves their stories together and foreshadows the political turmoil and discontent that boiled over on January 25, 2011.

The film is also participating in the 7th Ayam Beirut Film Festival, which runs from March 18 to 24.
