After the joyful news of a " Dumb and Dumber" sequel surfaced about eight months ago, we're now finding out that Warner Bros. has dropped the project.
The follow-up to the cult 1994 comedy, tentatively "Dumb and Dumber To," was lined up to be produced by New Line Cinema, whose parent company is Warner Bros.
According to link, the decision had to do with the box office performance of Steve Carell's "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." Like the Farelly sequel, "Wonderstone" had a budget of about $30 million, not to mention the weight of a well-respected cast of revered comedians Carell and Steve Buscemi. The film, however, only grossed $22 million in the U.S. box office. So Warner Bros. is, in their eyes, cutting its losses.
There still may be some hope yet. Bobby and Peter Farelly, the original directors who are back on board for the new project, are reportedly looking for a new financier, who could turn out to be "The Wolf of Wall Street" backer Red Granite.
The original "Dumb & Dumber" grossed over $127 million in the U.S. after its release in 1994.
