" Despicable Me 2" beat out Johnny Depp's " The Lone Ranger" this week in the U.S. box office, reaping in the enormous bounty of Independence Day movie-going. The animated film, featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Russell Brand, has picked up $82.5 million, bringing its total revenue up to $141.1 million since its release.

Last Wednesday, "The Lone Ranger" hit theaters, making $48.9 million just in time for the American July 4th holiday. It's going to have to rake in a lot more to make the suits at the studio happy, as the film not only had a budget of nearly $225 million, but also witnessed the unfortunate death of a crew member on set.

Lady cop comedy " The Heat," featuring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, comes in at third, with $25 million this week.
