A dystopian struggle between the privileged, wealthy world and the downtrodden masses seems to be resonating. " Elysium," Matt Damon's new sci-fi political thriller about one earth-bound man on a rogue mission to upset the socioeconomic system of oppression in 2154 has opened to the #1 spot in the American box office. It made $29.8 million this week. Damon co-stars with Jodie Foster and William Fichtner.
In second is " We're the Millers" starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. The comedy about a motley crew of drug smugglers posing as a suburban family earned $26.4 million, a decent fraction of that sum can probably be attributed to Aniston's strip tease scene in the film.
The animated " Planes" takes third with $22.2 million this week. The film revolves around a plane named Dusty Crophopper, voiced by Dane Cook, who dreams of being a racing plane but has one major obstacle: a fear of heights. " Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" drew in $14.4 million this week, starring the talented Logan Lerman.
" 2 Guns" with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg slid back from the number one spot last week to fifth. Despite star power and time-tested storyline, the flick only brought in $11.2 million, bring its gross total up to $48.6 million. In sixth, " Smurfs 2" earned $10.3 million this week.
Hugh Jackman's " The Wolverine" also experienced a slump, falling from third place last week to seventh, with $8 million. " The Conjuring," a horror chronicling the real-life 1970s paranormal investigators and their most chilling exorcism, earned $6.6 million, with " Despicable Me 2" not far behind with $5.9 million. Lastly, " Grown Ups 2" threw in another $3.6 million to its gross revenue of $123.7 million since opening five weeks ago.
