Paolo Sorrentino's ' The Great Beauty'was awarded the best European film of the year 2013 by the EuropeanFilm Academy in Berlin last Saturday.
Compared to Federico Fellini'smasterpiece ' La Dolce Vita,' Sorrentino earned the best directoraward that same night. The Great beauty follows a 65 year old famousjournalist living a very wealthy life thanks to a book he has writtendecades ago.
With this win, Sorrentino surpassed anumber of Europe's biggest productions for the year, including 'TheBroken Circle Breakdown,' which earned the biggest number ofnominations, and Abdellatif Kechiche's ' Blue is the Warmest Colour'which won the Palme D'or at Cannes this year.
The Great Beauty's star Toni Servillowas awarded best actor, while the best actress award went to theBelgian Veerle Beatens for her role in 'The Broken Circle Breakdown,'claiming it against stars like Keira Knightley and Naomi Watts. ' Love is All You Need,' directed by Susanne Bier won the best comedy film,a category recently added to the annual event's awards.
Jan Ole Gerster's ' Oh Boy' was awardedEuropean discovery of the year. Best documentary went to JoshuaOppenheimer for 'The Act of Killing,' and 'The Congress' was titledbest animated feature.
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar wasawarded a 'European Achievement in World Cinema' honoring for hiscareer.
