The 25th Palm Springs International Film Festival opened yesterday with honoring a number of Hollywood stars including Meryl Streep, who was awarded an “Icon” honoring for her career.
Streep's August: Osage County co-star Julia Roberts was awarded a “Spotlight” by the festival's jury, and she also presented Tom Hanks with the “Chairman” title for his acclaimed roles in Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks.
The Gravity star Sandra Bullock was awarded with the “Desert Palm Achievement Actress” prize, while 12 Years a Slave's lead Lupita Nyong'o was the breakthrough performance award winner, with the film's director Steve McQueen winning director of the year. The 77-year-old Nebraska star Bruce Dern was presented with a career achievement award.
David O. Russel's American Hustle's cast were awarded best ensemble, while Mathew McConaughey won the “Desert Palm Achievement Actor.” The prolific film score composer Thomas Newman won the “Frederick Loewe” award.
