Set in the 1920s; in a remote area in the Atlas Mountains in eastern Algeria, which is subjected to long winters, food shortage, and sickness, Brahim, a wealthy craftsman, is married to two women, both of whom failed to conceive, so he marries a third time in the hope that the third wife will give him an heir before he becomes too old.
