Refat is a teacher with a heart disease, who marries the poor girl Salwa, despite the opposition of his mother who is trying to persuade him to divorce her in exchange for his share in the inheritance. Salwa resorts to holy people hoping to cure her husband.

Refaat contracts a heart disease, and marries Salwa, a poor woman who is also a stranger to the town of Warraq, against his mother's will, who tries to convince him to divorce her in exchange for his share in the family's inheritance. Salwa fears for her husband's life, and seeks protection from saints. Refaat fakes a plot with his doctor to convince Salwa that her desired miracle has occurred. But when Refaat dies on his way to work, Salwa gets shocked and decides to break all the symbols of superstition.
