Malko returns from Egypt, and Tima receives him joyfully and asks him about his trip. He tells her about a large library from which he learned a lot. She invites him to visit her house and meet her father during the harvest season.

Munther proposes to Malko to lead the campaign against Egypt, but Malko refuses, arguing that the decision is not governed by emotions. Munther decides to visit the priest to influence Malko's appointment as commander.

The leaders confront the priest for their objection to Malko's choice as a leader and threaten to inform the Queen of Palmyra. Munther is thinking about selling his crops in Egypt, while Tima takes a horse from the stable and runs away from home.

The leaders revolt against Queen Zenobia for supporting the priest and not deposing him. Tima asks her mother Qamra if she would send them away if they were struck by the yellow air, as she did to the slave Haswa when she flogged him.

Malko tells Narges about the devastation that the Romans cause wherever they go, and that he dreams of creating a bookstore so that people will protect Palmyra from them. Qamra confronts Malko about his love for Tima after her sister Najda tattled on her, but he admits that he doesn't love her.

The priest performs Malko's wedding ceremony to his cousin Narges, much to Tima's sorrow, who accuses her mother, Qamra, of causing her to lose her love. She confronts Malco that he married an ailing woman and left her, stressing that he will regret his decision.

A duel takes place between Malko and Dowid, and Tima is frightened and saddened by the news of Malko's major injury. Dowid proposes to marry Tima, and her father, Munther, and her mother, Qamra, convince her that "death marriage" is the highest gift a man can offer to a woman he loves.

The priest reads Queen Zenobia's letter to the senators in Ish Al-Yamam, warning them against the "death marriage" and that this fatal custom is not of Palmyra's traditions. Queen Zenobia tells the army leaders that Aurelian and Roman soldiers shouted at their council to get rid of her.

Queen Zenobia reproaches Qusa for saying that her sitting on the throne is illegal, but he offers his obedience. Tima chooses Nasr Alat as a husband despite her mother's opposition. Queen Zenobia meets messengers from the Romans and reminds them that her country has often stood by them, but they deny this.

Munther is upset with his daughter Tima because she refuses to leave for Palmyra with her husband Nasr Alat and wants her father to force him to stay in their house. The Romans enter Egypt and Munther tells Qamra that all his business and money are with Marcus and everything may be lost.

The battle breaks out between the Kingdom of Palmyra and the Romans, and Emperor Aurelian mocks Queen Zenobia and that he will defeat her, seize control of Palmyra, and return it to their rule again.

One of the army commanders tells Queen Zenobia that Aurelian's forces allowed them to penetrate into their lands, then their knights attacked them and severely injured their army, and that they must retreat to Antioch until the army regroups.

Najda complains about the food served every day, and her mother tells her that the Romans did not leave them anything to eat. No news is heard from Malko during the war on the Romans, and sadness descends in Munther and Qamra’s house after the death of their daughter, Anaghim, and Najda grieves over her.

Munther tells Qamra that Malko is still alive. Hiran of Palmyra, the wealthy merchant, seeks to meet Emperor Aurelian, and tells him that he is preparing to provide him with two caravans of wheat and barley in order to free him from Queen Zenobia's siege.

Zabda is sad for letting Queen Zenobia go down to that accursed basement and leave Palmyra in order to provide the people with something to eat. Tima cries for being unable to help her people find food or cultivate the land. Zenobia is captured by Emperor Aurelian and Palmyra is considered finished.

Commander Zabda collapses after what happened to Queen Zenobia and says that he will carry on the fight and not negotiate with the Romans. Zenobia confronts Emperor Aurelian and tells him that they are people of civilization, while the Romans are invaders who feed on the remains of other civilizations.

Emperor Aurelian tells his commander, Claudius, that the greatest victory he can achieve that will go down in history is conquering Zenobia and defeating her will. Zenobia wishes every minute to die before she reaches Rome. Muqim collects a large amount of gold to offer as ransom to free Queen Zenobia.

Queen Zenobia continues her hunger strike. Malko's wife Narges becomes seriously ill, while her mother quarrels with Tima, who once again has feelings for Malko and panics when she learns that he is forming a secret group to kill Roman soldiers at night.

Malko is sad because he has become accustomed to his wife's illness. The Palmyrene army defeats Aurelian and chants Zenobia's name. Aurelian and his soldiers enter Palmyra and a fierce battle erupts. Malko and a large number of leaders are killed, while Zenobia ends up with an unknown fate.
