Selim is a young businessman who is married to Chafika without the knowledge of his mother, whom he hates. As for his father, he knows and keeps his son's secret. As Chafika is very afraid of Selim's mother, she is always nervous; Selim asks her not to be upset and invites her out.
When Chafika faints, Selim takes her to the doctor, who tells him that his wife, although she is old, is pregnant, and she has to take good care of herself; Selim rejoices a lot. Selim's mother decides to go to her son's new house with her daughter, Faiza, but her husband tries to stop her.
Yassin and Faiza go to visit Selim and are very happy with the pregnancy. Selim goes out with Chafika to a store that sells everything related to kids and buys some things for the newborn, and they are happy, although Chafika is sad due to being away from her family because of her marriage to Selim.
As Hamad's father dies, the funeral is held in his house, and his wife grieves so much so that she faints and is taken to the hospital. The secretary quarrels with her husband and complains to El Hajj. As for Selim, he is happy with his pregnant wife and treats her kindly.
Selim tells his father about the death of Chafika's brother, and he and Faiza prepare to go to the funeral, even his mother is sad when she hears the news, as she also learns that Zubeida is in the hospital. Meanwhile, Chafika does not know anything, but she feels that her husband is acting strangely.
As Selim's mother goes to his house and discovers his marriage to Chafika, she quarrels with her and kicks her out, but Selim tells her that his wife is pregnant and she is the one who has to leave the house. Chafika learns about her two brothers and mother and goes to the hospital to see her grandmother.
Chafika returns from the hospital, sad because of what happened to her brothers and grandmother, and Selim tries to comfort her. Hamad goes with his mother to bring the grandmother home, and he is still discussing with the officials the housing problem.
Selim's father goes to Chafika, accompanied by his daughter Faiza, to console her and to apologize to her for what his wife did; she tells him that she forgives her. The people of the neighborhood stage a sit-in in front of the state building so that they could be provided with social housing.
After Chafika goes to see her brother stealthily as she misses her family and her home, she returns to her home sad and complains to Selim. The secretary tells El Hajj she wants a divorce. Fatma takes her husband's money as a punishment because he wanted to marry another woman.
After Selim gets into a car accident and his wife panics, he goes with Chafika to the doctor, who tells her the baby is weak. The people of the neighbourhood run away from the state building yard as the employees expel them. El Hajj tells Selim his children want to divide the estate before his death.
As Yassin meets with the chief of the neighborhood and the governor, he proposes the project of working-class buildings so that the poor can live in a decent place. Chafika promises her husband that if she's reconciled with her mother, she will treat her well.
Fatma still locks her husband in the room and he only deals with her. Chafika suspects that the pain she is feeling is labour, so she goes to the hospital with Selim, but the doctor reassures her that there is still time to give birth.
Selim quarrels with Chafika and goes out. After his return, he does not sleep in the bedroom, but in the living room, and all because her father is charged with theft, even his mother started mocking him. Yassin gets sick because of his high blood pressure and Faiza goes to visit him.
Selim suspects the baby is the son of Chafika's first husband and grieves a lot. He goes to the sheikh and asks him what to do. Chafika gives birth to a girl with the help of Zahra the maid, as Selim didn't take her to the hospital, but when he learns, he returns home, unwilling to see the newborn.
Selim's mother goes with her husband and Faiza to see the baby and congratulate Chafika and is very happy with the baby. Chafika tells Faiza that Selim has changed with her, so Faiza decides to stay with her. Uncle Saleh, the old lonely man dies and is buried by the people of the neighborhood.
Chafika takes her daughter to the doctor whom she tells that she's weak because she was born in the seventh month. The doctor assures her that she was born in the ninth month, and thus Chafika learns the child is not Selim’s, so she hates the newborn and stops breastfeeding her until she dies.
Chafika suffers from a very bad psychological state due to her daughter's death, and Selim tries to help her to get back to normal. After she gets better, she tells Selim she wants to visit her family after his return from travel, and she goes with Faiza to bid him and Yassin farewell at the airport.
As Selim and Yassin travel and meet an Algerian young man who lives without legal papers in France, Selim tries to help him financially and gives him new clothes. As Zahra visits Chafika and brings her the food she loves, Chafika tells her when her husband returns, she will visit her family.
El Hajj goes to Chafika's house and tells her that Selim has died in France, so she becomes hysterical and keeps screaming. Chafika's mother finds out and tries to meet her daughter.
Chafika asks El Hajj to find her a new apartment, for fear of her mother-in-law bringing her family to her after she demanded her share in her husband’s inheritance. Indeed, her brother Hamad comes with his mother, but she does not open the door for them for fear of their reaction toward her.
Chafika goes to live in El Hajj's house, but his children think she's his girlfriend or wife, and they mock her and treat her badly. Selim didn't die, but was in a coma for a month and a half after a train accident. When he awakes, he calls his sister Faiza, who is shocked to hear from him.
When Selim calls El Hajj, Chafika answers the phone and is shocked when she hears his voice and makes certain he is alive. Selim returns to Algeria, but Yassin dies. Selim's mother is reconciled with Chafika, who, in turn, is reconciled with her family.
